P9060095Roebourne Community Wellness Centre opened its doors to the community for its Great Outback BBQ last week.

The Wellness Centre combined its Great Outback BBQ fundraiser with an Open Day to invite the wider community to take a look at the centre and to learn more about the respite support provided to carers in the region.

In keeping with the Great Outback BBQ theme, kangaroo stew was served for guests along with sausages cooked on the BBQ.

The Roebourne Ramblers entertained the crowd. Cyril Munda, a member of the band, is one of the carers who accesses respite support from the Centre. Ieramagadu/Roebourne traditional owner, Violet Samson, provided a welcome to countryand Pilbara Patrol Minister Rev John blessed the feast.

More than 30 service providers, government agencies, local community organisations and community members attended the BBQ, along with the families who access support from the Centre.

The Wellness Centre is a space where carers of people with a mental illness or intellectual disability, and also the people receiving the care, can take time out in a supportive environment.

Centre Coordinator Elaine Jolliffe said with so many organisations working to support people in the Pilbara, the Open Day was an opportunity for everyone to come together and get to know each other. It was also a chance for them to see the good work Frontier Services is doing for Indigenous carers in the community.

The service extends from Roebourne to Wickham, Karratha, Point Samson, and works extensively with Indigenous communities and families in the region.

Elaine said everyone had a wonderful time and were excited to hear about the services being provided.
